Events
Attending several global learning events has given me a better understanding of perspective on global topics outside the classroom. I think two of the most interesting talks I attended related to Islam in Russia, and the history of the region with the religion. Dr. Simona Merati gave a brief history of the role the Tatars and Turkic groups had in the region, the multiple identities Muslims in Russia have, and the changing face of Islam in some parts of Russia. I think one of the more interesting assessments was the difference in how Islam was practiced in the region, and the role it plays along with other state approved religions in politics.
I also attended events related to resilience in South Florida, and a workshop on nascent applications for new technologies. These are themes that push to search for solutions to serious issues. Finally, cultural events such as film screenings, language competitions, art exhibits, and celebrations enrich my life with ideas and perspectives that take me to another time and place as I begin to comprehend the idiosyncrasies of other groups.
